O’Connell Street Upgrade

Thanks to the lovely people at Auckland Council, I can share the following renders of the planned O’Connell Street Upgrade with you. It is a vast improvement and one can only hope that vehicle users won’t spoil the experience for the people who will be using the space. Quite easy to do and not so expensive, I am hoping that it will be closed off to vehicles in the not-so-distant future.

Why do they not just close it off to vehicles or install retractable bollards for deliveries etc like many cities in Europe?

  • I agree, seem a bit too obsessed with the Shared Space concept. Shared spaces fantastic ideas when need to keep car traffic in areas, but there doesn’t appear to be any need for cars here at all. Maybe its just a political decision, shared spaces easier to get through.

It is definitely a political decision – one where decision makers are looking after their jobs. The Council we have now is doing an amazing job but they need to take it one step further and grow a backbone i.e. make bold decisions and lead the way.
