Victoria Park Market

Victoria Park Market Upgrade.

The  historic Victoria Park Market in downtown Auckland is currently undergoing a $20 million renovation. By completion in mid 2012 80 new shops, boutiques, restaurants and cafes will be revealed at the new look Victoria Park Market. The upgrade includes a restaurant and nightclub zone off Drake St and a retail precinct at the Victoria St level. Restaurants will include Mexican eatery the Flying Burrito Brothers, an Argentinian steak house, a New York-style tapas bar and a Japanese restaurant. A German brewery is apparently interested in the Market, as well as designers from Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. All the restaurants and bars will have outdoor areas. Auckland radio station Big FM is to take up residence in a space with a stage for live performances. The heritage walk of famous New Zealanders will be resurrected, and it will also feature a small museum. I love the rooftop outdoor dining areas with views across Victoria Park. The grand opening can’t come soon enough.

This should be good. Although I worry about its location and the economic climate.

Looks promising. I used to enjoy coming here when I was a child, although it never had the cool bohemian atmosphere of the Cook St Markets.
Hopefully this renovation will rejuvenate it, however, going by the expected tenancies, bohemian cool may still elude VPM :)

As long as the heights are kept down on Wynyard Wharf you might even be able to spot the sea from the upstairs dining deck.
